Vaikom Muhammad Basheer

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (1908–1994) was a Malayalam writer and freedom fighter, fondly remembered as the “Beypore Sultan”. His warm, witty and deeply humane stories drew on everyday lives and ordinary people.

His best-known works include Balyakalasakhi, Pathummayude Aadu, Premalekhanam, Ntuppuppakkoru Anayundarnnu and Mathilukal. He received the Padma Shri in 1982.
